Coach Jacob Puzey
Founder, Director of Peak Run Performance
By most standards, Jacob’s running career did not start well. Jacob never qualified for the Oregon State Track & Field Championships and consequently was not offered a scholarship to run in college. Upon graduation from high school, Jacob walked-on to the cross country team at NJCAA powerhouse, Ricks College, where he and his team won back-to-back NJCAA Cross Country Championship team titles in 2000 and 2001.
While completing his undergraduate work in Hawaii, Jacob volunteered to coach the track team at the local high school and helped guide the team to its first state track title. After completing his undergraduate studies, Jacob returned to his Alma Mater in rural Oregon to teach and coach cross country and track. Each year, more and more of his athletes found their way upon the podium at the Oregon State Track & Cross Country Championships, culminating with the school’s first individual state champions in the 800m, 1500m, and 3,000m and the first Oregon state cross country team title. Before Jacob left his post as head coach at Hermiston High School, every school record from 800m to 5,000m for girls and boys had been broken.
In addition to furthering the distance running tradition at his Alma Mater, Jacob continued his graduate studies, taught full-time, started a race series, and trained towards his own running goals. As part of a marathon buildup in 2011, Jacob signed up for a trail 50K, accidentally won that race, and has since set numerous course records on various road and trail courses throughout North America.
Jacob gleaned coaching wisdom from each of the coaches with whom he has worked and has been able to implement their guiding principles into his own training and the training of the athletes with whom he works.
Jacob coaches athletes from all over the world of all ages and abilities – from newbies to national champions – and loves helping them reach new heights in their running performance.
